population demographics
Someone who preferred not to be named sent in a note the other day with statistics he said he received from teachers. Apparently the ethnic composition of the student body is something like 55% Polynesian/Maori and 20% Pakeha, with most of the rest being Asian; despite this, of 150 staff members, 120 are Pakeha. He also notes that there has consistently only been one member of senior management who is female (don’t know how true this is - I’ve never paid attention), almost as if it’s a token role.
(Wikipedia states that the percentages are more like “New Zealand European/ Pākehā 28%, Māori 9%, Samoan 15%, Chinese 12%, Indian 9%, other Asian 7%, other European 5%, Tongan 4%, Niuean 3%, other Pacific 2%, Other 6%.”, but I don’t know how old or accurate it is as it’s not footnoted.)
Food for thought, in any case, especially since the submitter also notes that the Polynesian staff also tend to be in the lower ranks. It’d be nice if the school opened up official stats, but hey.
So the person who started this blog is apparently a friend of a friend, and it seems to need some love - so if any of my Kiwi followers attend(ed) Avondale College, signal boost/ check it out!
