[Text reads: “Gays do have the same rights. Any gay person can marry, just like any straight person.” Found at Family First New Zealand’s Facebook page.]
Story time! Let’s say there’s a school which provides lunches for free for all their students. There is a small minority who have a dairy allergy, who are belittled for it as allergies are “abnormal” and a “mutation”, and therefore the non-allergic kids are clearly superior. At this school, no dairy-free food is served except plain toast.
Now, some of the parents of  the kids with said allergy get a bit frustrated, because the bullying is only amplified by the school administration’s official lack of acceptance of those with allergies, and complain. The school administration’s response is “well you’re not the majority, and none of the dairy-allergic kids are complaining, just some of their high-profile parents - you can’t even agree among yourselves that change is needed! Bullying is kids reflecting the biological truth - that allergies make one less capable than others - God made Adam and Eve without allergies! We don’t see what’s wrong with only supporting those who follow the examples of those first two people! Further,” they continue, “we provide toast, or you can bring your own food from home. We won’t recognize it or pay for it, and of course it’ll mean your kid gets teased for being “abnormal” or “too good for school food” since they’re clearly not partaking of the same experience as everyone else, but hey we’re offering your kid the same rights as everyone else - to eat our dairy-included food or not to eat it at all.” Then they add, somberly, “We’ll be praying for your children to be healed of their affliction.”
The parents immediately recognize the error of their ways, lay hands on their children and pray, and they happily eat the school food after that with no more conflict.
Or not.
Addendum: substitute allergies here for vegetarianism. Does the situation get more or less absurd if the minority is the minority by choice? People sometimes outgrow lactose intolerance. Does that mean all should be told “it’s just a phase, eat your yogurt now”?

About

Avatar The name's Kiran, but I go by Key (mostly because you'd be surprised how many people can't seem to grasp how the former's pronounced). I'm a queer geeky Kiwi klutz who seems to collect mental disorders like some do stamps.

I also moderate the genderfluidity tumblr - my posts are all tagged with "Key".

The Marvel (and occasionally other fandom) stuff is all at my feels blog and some of the art I post at deviantART is also rebloggable at my art blog.
